£20million housing scheme for Walsall

Housing
£20million housing scheme for Walsall
Adam Lumley The YamYam 29 Dec 09
WATMOS Community Homes have joined forces with Matrix Housing Partnership to build up to 200 new, rented homes over the next 5 years.

The charitable housing association provides affordable accommodation for people in housing need in Walsall and operates 8 Tennant Management Organisations in Birchills, Bloxwich, Brownhills, Chuckery, Delves, Leamore and Pelsall. Matrix is a partnership between Accord, Ashram, Caldmore, Rooftop, Trent and Dove and Trident housing associations which together with WATMOS now provides almost 25,000 homes across the Midlands.

WATMOS Chair Terry Edis said: “WATMOS is all about putting tenants first.  Local people work together to create the kind of communities where they want to live. Our estates are managed by the tenants and our service standards and delivery reflect the needs of our customers”

“The Matrix Partnership is a group of community-based organisations with a reputation for placing residents at the heart of everything that it does, so is an ideal partner for us and our tenants.

“Through joint working, Matrix is driving up service standards and influencing housing policy locally, regionally and nationally and we are delighted to be able to contribute to that.”

It is hoped that several new TMOs will be created by the building of the new homes. Mike Pritty, Chair of Matrix, said: “Matrix enables the partners to share ideas and best practice, spread some overhead costs and together have a significant national voice on key issues in housing today while remaining completely independent.

“WATMOS is an excellent organisation which is leading the way in community-based housing and we are delighted it has decided to join the partnership. It brings a wealth of experience and expertise and we look forward to sharing that knowledge.

AF Blakemore staff rise to a challenge again
The YamYam 18 Dec 09
After donating over 100 Christmas gift boxes to victims of domestic violence in Walsall, staff at AF Blakemore & Son Ltd in Willenhall volunteered to redecorate a local community church.

Thirty employees at the wholesale grocery distributor spent 2 days sprucing up communal rooms at St John's Community Church in Scarborough Road, Pleck, and even found time to put up some Christmas decorations. The Blakemore group supplies over 700 SPAR stores across the country and operates more than 200 convenience stores through its Tates subsidiary. Over the last 2 years, Tates raised £300,000 for the NSPCC.

The company is part of the Cares Business in the Community network of more than 350 companies that address social issues in communities by volunteering their employees' skills and time during business hours. Cares is a national initiative to increase the impact of employee volunteering in communities of greatest need and tackle social issues including education, employability and economic renewal.
