Epic journey for Shire Oak pupils stranded after volcano

Dedicated teachers at a Walsall Wood school engineered an epic journey to get 43 children back from Italy after the volcanic ash cloud grounded all flights to and from the UK. Year eight students at Shire Oak school, faced two extra nights in Italy, a 15-hour coach journey and a ferry passage to get back to school after the Easter break.

The pupils had been on a school excursion to Rome and were due to fly back to England on Friday (April 16), but the cloud of volcanic ash had swept in from Iceland meaning their flight was cancelled…
